Can an art gallery be arranged like a home? Jan Domicz, a visual artist and lecturer at School of Form, explores how simple colour interventions can change the way we perceive space inside Warsaw's Foksal Gallery. The experimental exhibition will be on view from 3 July to 28 August.

A guide to understanding space

The starting point for the "Residential Potential of Foksal Gallery" is an image from a guide for property sellers found online. It shows how different colour schemes can make a room appear larger, smaller, taller or more inviting. Jan Domicz brings these techniques into the gallery, turning them into the basis for an artistic experiment.

Each stage of repainting the gallery will be documented through photography. The resulting images will then be used to recreate the original JPG that inspired the project. In this way, a digital image influences the physical architecture of the gallery before becoming an image once again. Throughout the entire process, the gallery will remain open to visitors.

The found image resembles the documentation of an experiment that artists associated with Foksal Gallery might have carried out in the 1960s, exploring the relationship between space, image and perception. The tools of the avant-garde, once used to investigate spatial experience, reappear here in an unexpected context: as techniques supporting the sale of apartments on the real estate market. The exhibition traces this shift in meaning, following the journey of an idea from artistic experiment to a practical marketing tool.

The exhibition also features two films by British video artist John Smith – Dad's Stick and Home Suite. Their personal narratives and carefully constructed storytelling provide a counterpoint to the impersonal language of online interior design guides.
